Popeyes arrived to the UK in 2021, opening it’s first UK store in the Westfield Stratford shopping centre in London. They serve a range of chicken meals, from wraps and sandwiches, to wings and tenders, and have some great sides including the “Popeyes Original Biscuit” – not to be mistaken with what we call a biscuit in the UK!
Popeyes was first established as “Chicken On The Run” in 1972 by a man named Alvin C. Copeland in New Orleans. The restaurant itself was only open for a few months, serving traditional southern fried chicken before eventually reopening as “Popeyes” – this time selling spicy New Orleans style chicken! Today, it has over 3,000 restaurants across the US and Canada, and even more internationally. Since opening in the UK in 2021, it has 30 locations across the country, with more due to open in 2024. But there’s more to their story than just good chicken.
Coming from a place where music and Mardi Gras sit at the heart, Popeyes endeavours to bring that New Orleans spirit to all their restaurants. They endeavour to make everyone feel welcome, and reflect this in all aspects of their business. They make sure their tasty food extends to those with a flexitarian or vegan diet, and have ensured their chicken is not only locally sourced where possible, but is also halal. The chicken itself is fresh, never frozen, and is marinated for 12 hours in their signature blend of Louisiana herbs and spices. Their caring approach extends past food, too, ensuring their staff feel comfortable to bring their authentic selves to the workplace, and creating security with no 0 hour contracts. They call themselves “soul powered”, and ensure this commitment is carried across all parts of Popeyes.
